OCDCAUSES – The individual who suffers from Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) becomes trapped in a pattern of repetitive thoughts and behaviors that are senseless and distressing but extremely difficult to overcome. Most people with OCD resort to repetitive behaviors called compulsions. The most common of these are washing and checking to see if something is locked, closed, etc.  Abnormalities in other parts of the brain and an imbalance of brain chemicals, especially serotonin, may contribute to OCD.  Researchers are still trying to pinpoint the exact cause, but, genetic influences, and environmental factors are being studied.

TREATMENT – Depending on the severity of your symptoms, your doctor may prescribe only counseling or counseling and an antidepressant, such as fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, or sertraline.  Antidepressants are considered the most effective medicine for OCD, researchers are studying whether other medicines can be combined with antidepressants for better results.  For relieving anxiety of OCD, alternative therapies such as massage and yoga are helpful.

PREVENTION – There is no clear preventative measures as to not becoming obsessive.  The best way to prevent a relapse of OCD symptoms is by staying with your therapy and taking any medicines exactly as they have been prescribed.
