CAUSES – Eczema has many causes. One of the most common is a condition called atopic dermatitis. One of the symptoms of atopic dermatitis is excessive skin dryness, which seems to be due a lack of certain skin proteins. The more common causes of eczema can included the following:
- Some types of soaps and detergents
- Low humidity
- Wool clothing
- Occlusive rubber or plastic gloves
TREATMENT – The most effective treatment; you should remove whatever is causing the allergic reaction.
PREVENTION – To prevent dry skin, take warm showers or baths, use a mild soap or body cleanser, and avoid wearing tight-fitting, rough, or scratchy clothing. You should never scratch the rash. If you can’t stop yourself from scratching, cover the area with a dressing. Anything that causes sweating can irritate the rash. Avoid strenuous exercise during a flare. An anti- inflammatory topical agent may be necessary to control a flare of atopic dermatitis. You can also apply a nonprescription steroid cream (hydrocortisone). The cream must be applied as often as possible without skipping days until the rash is gone.
