CAUSES – An earache is pain in the ear which can occur because of conditions within the ear or the ear canal. A middle ear infection, which is known as acute otitis media, is inflammation of the middle ear and is the most frequent diagnosis in children. An infection of the ear canal (otitis externa) is commonly known as swimmer’s ear.
TREATMENT – Earaches should be examined by an health care practitioner, but symptomatic treatment for pain and fever may be done at home. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen are appropriate to use. A warm compress to the ear can help with pain control.
PREVENTION – You should never use objects to clean the ear (paper clips or bobby pins) that may tear the skin. For excess wax buildup, you should have it removed by a health care practitioner who can remove the debris by using an otoscope.
