CAUSES – There is evidence that celiac disease is partially genetic and partially inherited. It has also been suggested that celiac disease is caused by an immunological reaction to gluten in the diet that inflames and destroys the inner lining of the small intestine.
TREATMENT – The best treatment of celiac disease is a gluten free diet. Avoid all foods made from wheat, rye, and barley. Examples are breads, cereals, pasta, crackers, cakes, pies, cookies, and gravies. You should consult with a dietitian so that they can identify which products you should be avoiding. A few foods that may contain gluten include: canned soups, salad dressings, ice cream, candy bars, instant coffee, ketchup, mustard, yogurt, and pasta. To tone the intestinal tract, use a yoga position or abdominal massage.
PREVENTION – Maintain a gluten free diet.
